With the book “The anthology of songs about Binh Dinh in 10 years (1995-2005)”, published by the Music Publishing House and Binh Dinh Writers and Artists Association in 2007, readers can partly realize the appearance of Binh Dinh’s music in the past 10 years.
With a collection of 30 authors’ 110 songs, the number itself doesn’t mean anything because in music as well as in other fields of art we can’t only use the quantity. However, we really respect the fact that the composers have regularly composed songs enriching the music life in the province despite any difficult circumstances.

The anthology of songs about Binh Dinh in the past 10 years |
As the poet Nguyen Thanh Mung remarked in the preface, the obvious strongpoint in songs about Binh Dinh is “the vitality of Vietnamese music in Binh Dinh, which bears all the hallmarks of a cultural area with full of nuances.” That hallmark is not only showed directly in songs composed for plays (the song Van vuong (be unable to part) composed by Dao Duy Kien for tuong (classical opera) Troi Nam (the Vietnam’s sky) but also imbued with melodies of the 5th quarter’s folksong, of Binh Dinh’s Bai Choi folksong. The hallmark is particularly showed in the names of songs: Tieng Trong Quang Trung (Quang Trung drumbeats) (composed by Duong Viet Hoa), Quy Nhon-Thanh pho bien xanh (Quy Nhon-the city by the sea) (Le Khac Hung), Ai ve Binh Dinh (Anyone comes to Binh Dinh) (Chau Duc Khanh), Thanh pho Quy Nhon (Quy Nhon city) (Dao Minh Tam), Thi Nai-Cay cau tuong lai (Thi Nai- the bridge for the future) (Gia Thien), Binh Dinh yeu thuong (beloved Binh Dinh) (The Tuyen), Hat tu ban dao Phuong Mai (singing from Phuong Mai peninsula) (Vu Trung). Songs about Binh Dinh are closely linked with the Binh Dinh’s rhythm, and devoted a deep affection to its beauty and changes in the past 10 years.
It seems that we still have the vagueness because even when Binh Dinh is the key theme in these songs, they haven’t left any bold hallmark in the hearers’ mind. Perhaps only songs-to-be about Binh Dinh will be able to become Binh Dinh peole’s pride. So do love songs. Music lovers have the right to hope when looking at selected songs in the past 10 years.
Composing songs is only a part in the music life. Alongside this, it’s necessary to hold music activities in which it’s instrumentalists and singers who bring songs with their full of vitality to music lovers. It is, therefore, hoped that, together with the publishing of this anthology, many activities will be hold so that songs will be able to become more and more familiar and beloved with hearers.
