They accidentally love music, but couldn’t devote themselves full time to it. Although they have done all sorts of jobs to earn a living, they have still sensed a smouldering affection for music.
1. Those who are on Tang Bat Ho street of Quy Nhon city have once or twice seen a middle-aged man sitting behind a chest of lock repair tools with a guitar on his hands.
Passersby could stop and listen to pieces of classical music or flamencos he was playing. He is called Nguyen Phan Anh.
Phan Anh studied at Binh Dinh Art & Culture Secondary School from 1985 to 1988. “Once I heard a classical music record played in my neighbor’s house by chance. I love classical music since then,” he said.
The most interesting thing of classical music was that it shows all features of sound. The musician could also show his feelings, he added. It was, therefore, difficult to understand pieces of classical music and flamencos.
During three years at school, he had to spend 8 hours practising each day. Then he and some of his friends joined some art performances, according to Phan Anh.
He was industrious in practising but he had to give up then to earn his living. During 17 years, it seemed that he forgot the enthusiasm.
However, when holding the guitar on his hands, his love for music still remains. Anh often plays the guitar in his free time.
At present, Phan Anh has more time to practise playing the guitar. “After 10 months of continuous practice, I now become a guitarist again,” Anh said.
Sometimes he was believed to leave the guitar, but it was still with him as a bosom friend when he was in difficulty, he said. He now repairs locks by day and practises playing the guitar or goes to perform by night.
2. Coming to Truong Ho’s house, I heard the sound of the saxophone from the second floor. The 81-year man is a sax lover when he was a child.
“I felt warm when suddenly hearing the sound of the sax in winter nights. At that time, I used to go to a café to listen to sax performances,” Ho said. “Also, I love sax partly because its sound is similar to the human voice.”
His love for sax came with him during his young time. In 2003 when he stopped working as a trader, he had a chance to practise playing the sax.
Initially, he was very enthusiastic about learning how to play the sax. “I learned from my teacher for several months, then I learned by myself during two years,” he said.
He now has five musical instruments, including one clarinette and four saxes. He only felt pleased after buying the fifth one, according to Ho.
He keeps all carefully. One of my friends, who well knows all kinds of saxophones, said that his saxes are valuable, made in the U.S.
I don’t know much about musical instruments, but still felt their value because they are closely related to the man’s enthusiasm in his lifetime.
“Anyone who know how to play the sax could be my teacher. I always want to learn from friends and colleagues. At this age, the sax is my friend. When playing the sax, I feel comfortable. Its sound doesn’t make my neighbors feel annoyed for I play the sax in suitable time,” Ho said,
