The song “Quy Nhon – the poetry city” by Nguyen Thuy Kha has become familiar with many people in Quy Nhon city. He has recently composed a chorus named Quy Nhon. This is his first chorus about a city.
You were born in Hai Phong, but why are you deeply attached to Quy Nhon city?
After the country’s unification, I came to Quy Nhon to find my friend’s aunt. At that time, a dinner with a cozy atmosphere in a small house made me think of the name of the city: is this the home for those coming from everywhere?
I really became attached to Quy Nhon in the autumn of 1984 for I had many close friends there and I realized the simple-but-poetic beauty of the city.
The day when I visited Han Mac Tu’s tomb in Ghenh Rang coincided with his birthday. After the visit, I wrote many poems and songs, including the poem “Quy Nhon” and the song “Quy Nhon – the poetry city”.
Returning to Ha Noi, the musician Van Cao and I talked about Quy Nhon and I knew that he also became attached to Quy Nhon city. In 1985, Van Cao, Nguyen Trong Tao, and I were invited to visit Nghia Binh province (Binh Dinh now). I had more new friends during the visit. I’m really happy to know that my song has been known by many people in Quy Nhon.
Could you brief on the chorus?
I wrote a song about Quy Nhon but I think that was not enough for such a city. I was invited to attend Tay Son – Binh Dinh Festival in early August. Right after returning to Ha Noi, I wrote a new song entitled “Quy Nhon in my heart”.
I remembered that Van Cao also wrote three poems about Quy Nhon in his visit to Nghia Binh in 1985. An idea flashed through my mind and I decided to compose a chorus by combining his poems. However, the city of these days wasn’t mentioned in his poems because he passed away in 1995. I myself had to write this part. When the chorus was born, the musician Doan Nguyen and I prepared for recording it.
We combined bai choi, Cham, and Bana folk-songs with the chorus, using the sound of Tay Son wardrum as the background music.
Do you plan to popularize the chorus?
This is my present for those who live in Quy Nhon. To widely popularize the chorus, I hope that it will be permitted to be published. If possible, the chorus may be performed on March 31 next year. Many musicians in Ha Noi and HCM City praised the chorus.
To me, I’m happy to present the chorus to Quy Nhon city.
