Quotas imposed on Vietnam's garment exporting to the US will be abolished as of Jan. 1, 2007, Secretary General of the Vietnam Garment and Apparel Association Le Van Dao confirmed Wednesday.
The abolishment, which was in line with the World Trade Organization’s regulations and the Vietnam-US bilateral trade agreement, would surely facilitate Vietnam's enterprises, Dao added.
However, the garment sector would have to face many difficulties in 2007, he said, adding that the US Committee for the Implementation of Textile Agreements (CITA) was likely to make detailed plans for each Vietnam's outgoing garment batch, which would be exported under the last period of the quota system.
Under the plans, the US will refuse importing garment of additional quota for 2006 till at least Feb. 1, 2007.
Additional quota which is equivalent to 5 percent of the basic quota for 2006 will be separately imported.
