Seven Mekong delta provinces are implementing a pilot scheme under a programme to produce 1 million tonnes of high-quality rice, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Farmers in Dong Thap, Kien Giang, An Giang, Long An, Soc Trang, Tien Giang and Can Tho provinces are growing selected rice strains on between 15,000-20,000 ha of land, aiming to harvest at least 5.5 tonnes of grains per ha.

After the trial period, the area will be expanded to 200,000 ha as targeted in the programme.
