US President George W. Bush on Dec. 20 signed into law a bill that includes establishing Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) with Viet Nam.
The PNTR provisions were part of a larger bill that dealt with taxes, health and other domestic social provisions that the Republican-controlled Congress passed during the final minutes of its session this month.
Speaking after signing the bill, President Bush said that with this bill, the US will broaden its trade relations with Viet Nam.
“It's in the interest of the US to promote prosperity around the world, and the best way to do so is through opening up markets and free and fair trade,” he added.
He stressed that Viet Nam will join the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in January 2007 and “you'd be amazed at what it's like to be in Viet Nam.”
President Bush also said that he and his wife, Laura, just returned from Viet Nam . They saw the outpouring of affection for the American people.
There's amazing changes taking place in Viet Nam as the economy has opened up, he confided, emphasising that Viet Nam is demonstrating a strong commitment to economy reform.
The US President also said he believed that is going to encourage political reform and greater respect for human rights and human dignity.
