The Prime Minister has required relevant agencies and localities to spare no efforts to put all sections of the trans-national Ho Chi Minh Highway stretching from the northern Cao Bang province to southernmost Ca Mau province into traffic during the 2007-2010 period.
The Prime Minister Office released a communique on the Prime Minister's order, stressing that the highway is a key project for the national modernisation and industrialisation programme, running through 30 provinces and cities.
The 1,690-km-long highway is the biggest transport infrastructure construction project in Viet Nam with a total investment capital of nearly 8,000 billion VND.
Construction of the Ho Chi Minh Highway started in 2000. Upon completion in 2010, the highway will run parallel to the existing National Highway No. 1. Its construction is crucial to the development of remote areas and is expected to help narrow the socio-economic gap between rural and urban regions.
