Construction of the 1,200 MW Vung Ang I thermal-power plant, the largest of its kind in Viet Nam so far, began on Dec. 23 in Ky Anh district, the central province of Ha Tinh.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung was present at the site and gave a command for the start.
The plant will be built at an investment capital of 1.25 billion USD on an area of 216 ha in the Vung Ang Economic Zone and close to the Vung Ang deep sea port.
The power plant has two 600 MW turbine groups that will produce 7.2 billion kWh a year. Construction of the first turbine group is scheduled to be completed in March 2011 and the second turbine group in March 2012.
Prime Minister Dung stressed that Vung Ang I power plant was an important project of the country as it will generate 10 percent of the country's current total electricity output.
The Viet Nam Construction and Machinery Installation Corporation, the project's investor, is required to ensure the progress, quality, safety and effectiveness of the project, he said.
The Prime Minister also asked Ha Tinh province to be prepared to carry out other major projects, namely Ngan Tuoi-Cam Trang hydro-power plant, steel manufacturing and exploiting Thach Khe iron mine.
