Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said education and training were the key to the nation’s modernisation and industrialisation process.
He made the statement on Dec. 12 while attending a working session of the National Education Council, where he stands as chairman.
Dung said he appreciated the council members’ contributions, especially in reviewing education from 2001 to 2006 and a strategy to develop education from 2008 to 2020.
Dung asked the Ministry of Education and Training to continue raising standards of education, especially tertiary schooling, and to complete the national educational system, focusing on building four international level universities.
He said the sector must strive to make a breakthrough in vocational training in the next three years, and make sure more than 50 percent of labourers are trained by 2010.
On the controversial topic of tuition fees, he said people-founded schools can self-manage their own finances. The Government would have specific regulations for State school, depending on each region and the economic conditions of local people.
Dung affirmed that the State would continue to give priority to education (more than 20 percent of the State budget) by creating conditions to open people-founded schools at every educational level.
