Viet Nam essentially contains bird flu

By Feb. 11, 2007, bird flu had been essentially put under control, said the Veterinary Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

However, the department noted, the Mekong delta province of Bac Lieu has not fully met all requirements that would enable it to announce itself free from bird flu as it only passed 19 days without further bird flu outbreaks.

Since bird flu reoccurred in the Mekong delta region on Dec. 12, 2006, four provinces: Tra Vinh, Kien Giang, Soc Trang and Hau Giang, and Ca Mau City have escaped a bird flu epidemic. Meanwhile, Ca Mau and Vinh Long are preparing to declare themselves free of the disease as no outbreaks have been detected in the two provinces over the past 21 days, the period required for an affected locality to free itself from the epidemic.

Localities nationwide continued carrying out additional vaccinations on their poultry flocks. More than 9.8 million ducks and over 3.1 million chickens have been vaccinated.
