Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved a timeline for the trans-national Ho Chi Minh Highway being built from the northern Chinese border in Cao Bang Province to the southernmost province of Ca Mau.
The project, slated to run through 30 provinces and cities, began in 2000. The 3,167-kilometer highway’s construction has been planned through three phases until 2020.
By the end of the first phase (2000-07), a two-lane motorway from Hoa Lac in the northern Ha Tay province to Tan Canh in the central highlands province of Kon Tum will be completed. The remaining stretches of road will be connected in second phase (2007-10).
During the final phase (2010-20), most of the highway will be open to traffic and some stretches will be upgraded to international expressway standards.
