Vietnam earmarks $5.9 mln for drought prevention

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has signed off on VND95.1 billion (US$5.9 million) from the State budget to help 14 northern provinces combat drought in the 2007 spring crop.

The beneficiaries are Ha Tay with VND13.3 billion, Hung Yen VND8 billion, Hai Duong VND6.5 billion, Thai Binh VND6.9 billion, Ha Nam VND12.1 billion, Nam Dinh VND5.1 billion, Ninh Binh VND11.3 billion, Vinh Phuc VND4 billion, Phu Tho (VND5.7 billion, Bac Giang VND4.9 billion, Son La VND1.5 billion, Hoa Binh VND4.2 billion and Nghe An VND2 billion.

The funding will be used to dredge estuaries and rivers to route water for agriculture and to pay for electricity and oil charges used for water pumping machines.

The Prime Minister authorized chairmen in the select provinces to use the financial support properly in line with current regulations.
