The Head of the Board for Dissemination of Elections to the 12th National Assembly held an on-line discussion with voters on May 2.
The forum was aimed at throwing light on issues relating to the needed requirements, quality and eligibility of candidates to the nation's decision-making body.
Nguyen Van Yeu, who is also Vice Chairman of the 11th National Assembly, reaffirmed that all Vietnamese citizens, of at least 21 years of age and who meet the requirements stipulated in the Law on Elections, have the right to run for a seat in the legislature.
Party members must obtain permission from the Party if they want to make a parliamentary run, Yeu said, adding that this is a common practice of many parties in other countries.
Turning to the qualities needed for candidates, Yeu said that candidates must be honest above all else and that lawmakers found to be corrupt would be punished to the fullest extent of the law.
Highlighting this area, the NA leader urged voters to embark on thorough studies of candidates in order to select the right people to represent them at the country's decision-making body.
At the session, Yeu also spoke of the need to improve the interaction between deputies and voters regarding the NA's activities.
The dialogue was co-organised by the Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper and the on-line newspaper of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
