The Veterinary Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has officially confirmed that avian influenza has returned to many communes of the provinces of Quang Ninh, Nam Dinh and Son La in the north and Can Tho in the south.
Tests show that all dead fowls in those provinces are positive for the H5N1 virus.
In Quang Ninh province, bird flu was detected on May 16 at a family in Mong Cai Town, with 116 ducks and geese dead by H5N1 of a total of 443 baby fowls that were not vaccinated.
In the south, the epidemic reemerged in Can Tho province on May 17 with 375 ducks of the total 1,500 unvaccinated ducks of two families in Thanh Loc commune, Vinh Thanh district dead because of H5N1 virus.
The disease also attacked the northern mountainous province of Son La with 130 ducks and geese dead of the total 960 heads. Those fowls were not vaccinated as well.
Bird flu has broken out in Nam Dinh on May 19 with over 1,200 unvaccinated ducks dead in three families, all because of H5N1 virus.
The above localities have culled all the ill fowls and decontaminated the disease-striken areas already. The Veterinary Agency has sent their experts to those provinces to help the local authorities prevent the spread of this dangerous epidemic.
So far 60 provinces have been implementing vaccination of the first phase in 2007 with over 116.6 million birds injected.
