On September 5th, nearly 22 million students from pre-school to tertiary education will start a new school-year. This is the second year that the education sector has implemented a campaign tackling negative phenomena and the achievement craze in exams.

The 2007-2008 school year will see the continuing of the implementation of Resolution No 40 and 41 of the 10th National Assembly, Instruction No 06-CT/TU of the Politburo on the campaign to study and follow the example of President Ho Chi Minh’s ethics.

Schools registered to implement the four parts of the campaign, which focus on the requirement that each teacher set an example in ethics and self-study.

On this the occasion, President Nguyen Minh Triet sent a letter to teachers and students, urging the education sector to continue to promote these two issues in order to improve the quality of education.

During this school-year, the sector will develop a plan to build a strong pool of lecturers for universities and colleges, targeting training for 2,500 Ph.D. degree holders, including 1,000 to be sent abroad.

The education sector will give more priority to education for disadvantaged and ethnic minority groups, for children in deprived areas; and enhance international cooperation to get more assistance to these areas.

From mid-August, the education sector nationwide was hurrying to prepare for the new school year.

In the 2007-2008 school year, seven public schools in the Red river delta province of Nam Dinh has been established. The province mobilized 47 billion VND to build nearly 900 classrooms, repair hundreds of others and buy teaching and learning aids. The provincial education sector also enrolled an additional 638 teachers.

The southern province of Ca Mau completed the construction of 1,541 classrooms and upgraded more than 500 classrooms and the Book and School Equipment Company received over 2 million books and learning tools to deliver to bookshops.
