Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said on June 2 that Vietnam ’s socio-political situation remained stable in the first five months of this year despite various difficulties.

The PM said there were a number of areas reporting high growth, particularly agricultural production, during the Cabinet’s regular monthly meeting and he highlighted the strong possibility that agriculture, particularly grains, will produce bumper crops.

Exports have continued growing and foreign investment have increased sharply, the government leader said, adding that Vietnam is set to achieve its 7-percent economic growth target this year.

The PM asked ministries, agencies and localities to put forth measures to curb inflation and develop production to boost economic development.

Along with temporarily halting, suspending and rescheduling unnecessary projects, localities should speed up major works that serve the public’s production and lives, he said.

In addition, further attention should be paid to improving lives for poor households, flood victims and people in mountainous and remote areas, the PM said.

He requested for the acceleration of administrative reform and fighting corruption and illegal activity.

The Ministry of Planning and Investment’s report indicated that industrial production was estimated at 271 trillion VND in the first five months of this year, up 16.4 percent year-on-year.

Agricultural production developed stably despite natural disasters and epidemics.

Additionally, retail sales and service revenues reached 368.9 trillion VND, an increase of 29.7 percent from the same period last year, and the tourist sector registered a growth of 43.7 percent in its service revenue.

The five-month export value recorded nearly 23.4 billion USD, up 27.2 percent from the same period last year, and foreign direct investment reached 3.95 billion USD, an year-on-year increase of 25.4 percent.

Reports of 28 ministries and agencies, 43 cities and provinces and eight economic groups showed that by the end of May, 995 projects valued at over 3.98 trillion VND had been halted, suspended or rescheduled.

The value represented 7.8 percent of state budget’s total investment in domestic projects.

During the Cabinet meeting, the government also discussed various reports on fighting corruption, inspections and administrative reforms.
