The Global Summit of Women kicked off in Hanoi on June 5, bringing together more than 900 women from business, academia and governments from across the world.

The three-day summit, entitled “Women and Asia – Driving The Global Economy”, will focus on discussing opportunities and challenges facing the Asia-Pacific region as well as review cooperation between the region’s governments and businesses in improving the role of women.

According to Chairwoman of the summit, Irene Natividad, the summit creates a global forum for delegates to exchange effective strategies and experiences in ensuring sustainable economic development, social justice and supporting women to access education and politics.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said issues discussed at this summit are ones of great concern to Vietnam during the country’s renewal process.

In Vietnam , women are considered great forces in all fields and hold many key national positions as leaders of the State, ministries and localities, said the PM.

He cited female delegates of the 12 th National Assembly accounting for 26 percent.

He said more than 1 million women manage around 25 percent of Vietnam’s businesses and companies, including leading ones, and more than 30 percent of small and individual business.

The PM said this amounted to each woman generating an estimated four jobs for the country.

PM Dung told Vietnam has recorded considerable progresses in gender equality in recent years thanks to great efforts of the State and people and also through the support, assistance and cooperation of international friends, including women organisations.

Within the framework of the summit, a Vietnam Business Forum and a ceremony to award ASEAN business women were held on June 5.
