The nation’s press made an important contribution to the country’s achievements during 2008, as the country faced numerous difficulties arising from the global financial crisis, natural disasters and epidemics, said Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

The PM made this statement during the lunar new year’s first regular press conference in Hanoi on Feb. 4.

The PM said that, over the past year, Vietnam recorded achievements across all fields. Most worthy of note were the stabilisation of the macro-economy, the successful control of inflation, maintaining an economic growth rate of 6.23 percent, as well as continuing to ensure social security and national defence.

He stated that the press continued to act as an important information channel for the Government and, as a result, made practical contributions to national construction work.

The PM asked the media agencies to continue to record these achievements and reform their working procedures in order to ensure that they are compatible with the current phase of industrialisation, modernisation and integration.

The PM added that, during 2009, the Government and its agencies would actively cooperate and work to ensure favourable conditions for Vietnam ’s press agencies to make further contributions to the country’s socio economic development and national construction.
