National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong honoured the national congress of students, which opened in Hanoi on Feb. 15, with his personal presence and a special gift reminding youth of their key role in national development.
Trong presented the congress with a large baldachin with a call for Vietnamese students to follow the late President Ho’s teachings to constantly upgrade their morals and improve their skills to contribute to turning Vietnam into “a prosperous people, a powerful country and a just, democratic and advanced society”.
The legislative leader urged the students’ association to encourage their members to focus on self-study while actively taking part in study promotion activities such as learning clubs, contests and scientific research.
“All this is very necessary to help massive numbers of students practise what they have learned and have more accesses to advanced technology,” he emphasised.
In reply, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee Nguyen Dac Vinh reported the drastic growth of the students association which has so far admitted almost 700,000 members out of over 1.6 million students from all parts of the country and those following education overseas.
The Congress, which was attended by 647 best students, held four forums in the afternoon, covering major topics on innovations, voluntary work and global integration.
