Vietnam’s achievements in poverty reduction, education and gender equality have won acclaim from the international community.
This was reported at a seminar held in Hanoi on June 2 by the Ministry of Planning and Investment regarding the implementation of the United Nations’ Development Goals (MDGs).
After eight years of implementing the MDGs, Vietnam has effectively combined the goals with its socio-economic development plan in various regions fields. As a result, the country has made remarkable gains in terms of sustainable poverty reduction and comprehensive growth. Since 2000, as many as 15 million Vietnamese people have escaped poverty.
In addition, Vietnam’s achievements in education and gender equality have also been praised by the international community. The country is expected to complete the popularization of primary education by 2010. It is also one of countries that has the highest number of female leaders in the world.
However, like many other countries, Vietnam is facing huge challenges in HIV/AIDS prevention and environmental protection. Most provinces and cities in Vietnam have people living with HIV/AIDS, most of them aged between 20 and 40. Furthermore, the ecological environment is heavily polluted due to poor public awareness of industrial development.
