Festival recalls Dong Da victory over Qing invaders
15:40', 19/2/ 2010 (GMT+7)

A festival was held in Hanoi on Feb. 18 - the fifth day of the first lunar month - to celebrate the 221st anniversary of the Ngoc Hoi-Dong Da victory over 200,000 Chinese Qing invaders.

The festival opened with an incense offering to commemorate the national hero – Emperor Quang Trung.

In his speech, Chairman of the Dong Da district People’s Committee Tran Duc Hoc highlighted the historic significance of the victory in the spring of 1789 when the Tay Son insurgent army, under the leadership of Nguyen Hue, defeated the Qing invaders and took back freedom and independence for the nation.

The festival was filled with a unique traditional art performance and other cultural activities, including drumming, dragon dance and martial art performances.

On Feb. 17, the central province of Binh Dinh, the homeland of Quang Trung - Nguyen Hue, also celebrated the 221st Ngoc Hoi-Dong Da victory.

Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Van Thien highlighted the merit of Quang Trung-Nguyen Hue and his siblings in gathering people to fight the enemies for national independence.

An art performance recalling the Ngoc Hoi-Dong Da victory was held solemnly later, attracting thousands of people.

Earlier, delegations offered incense and flowers at the monument of Emperor Quang Trung.
