The Government convened in Hanoi on May 27 to review the socio-economic performance in May and the first five months of this year, and discuss a draft resolution to promote global economic integration.

Cabinet members agreed that the country’s socio-economic situation is moving on the right track.

The consumer price index has kept falling since this March. In May, it rose by only 2.78 percent from last December, the lowest rise over the past three years.

In addition, the ceiling interest rate on savings in Vietnam dong dropped to 12 percent from 14 percent.

In the first five months, the country generated jobs for over 612,000 people, of whom 32,140 were sent abroad as guest workers.

However, according to cabinet members, the country’s industrial growth remained low from the same period of last year. The industrial development index for the first five months went up only 4.2 percent, 50 percent lower than the same period of the last two years.

Businesses in Hanoi and HCM City are still struggling with the lack of capital, falling purchasing power and interest rates which have been reduced but remain high.
