Proposal of digging a canal from Thi Nai Lagoon to the sea
13:48', 26/2/ 2007 (GMT+7)

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Duong (left) is inspecting Yen Ngua (Harness-shape) Mountain, part of Phuong Mai mountain range

According to expert advice, a canal from Thi Nai Lagoon to the sea should be built at Yen Ngua (Harness-shape) Mountain at Hoi Giao Village, Hoi Loc Hamlet, Nhon Hoi Commune, Quy Nhon City in order to create new waterways for Quy Nhon and Nhon Hoi Ports. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Duong, Secretary of Binh Dinh Province Communist Party Committee, Mr. Vu Hoang Ha, member of the Vietnamese Central Communist Party Committee, Deputy secretary of Binh Dinh Province Communist Party Committee, Chairman of Binh Dinh Province People’s Committee and representatives of authorized bodies and agencies made a field visit to the location.

Yen Ngua Mountain is 70 metres below sea level (the lowest point) and 170 metres wide. If the canal linking Mai Huong Bay (at Thi Nai Lagoon) and Nhon Hoi, Quy Nhon Ports is digged 20 metres underground , traffic of vessels to the two ports will be less crowded.

The provincial leaders and authorized bodies said that the project of building the canal was feasible. However, the experts should carry out more careful studies on natural geography of the site, environmental impact and feasibility of the project.
