Binh Dinh province People’s Committee yesterday (June 5) held a meeting in response to the World Environment Day at the area of the Victory status (Quy Nhon city). Nearly 1,500 representatives of the provincial bodies, agencies and schools attended the meeting.
The theme of the World Environment Day 2007 is “Melting Ice – A hot topic” entitled by the United Nations. Binh Dinh is a central coastal province, so melting ice and climate change can badly affect the province’s socio-economic development. According to results of a survey at more than 1,600 small and medium-sized enterprises in the province, there are 70% of enterprises having backward technologies, 12% with medium technologies and only 18% with advanced technologies. Alongside this, the area for planting forests and trees still limits. The key solutions for the counter-climate change in Binh Dinh are to, therefore, improve the production technologies, diversify the alternative energy sources, use fossil fuel reasonably, reduce the industrial emissions, and intensify the area of forest and trees in the province.
After the meeting, delegates grew trees at the north of Ha Thanh river, and members of HCM Communist Youth Union and students marched in the main streets in Quy Nhon city, tidying up the coastal area.
Also on June 5 there were many activities taken place in the provincial districts.
