Institute of Malariology Parastology and Entomology Quy Nhon on August 9 held a meeting to assess the results for the prevention and control of the parasite disease and malaria in the first half of 2007 in the Central region and Central Highlands. Leaders and experts of 15 provinces, including Central provinces from Quang Binh to Binh Thuan and 4 of Central Highlands, and health experts of Asia Development Bank attended the meeting.

Reported statistics showed that the number of malaria-infected patients in the first 6 months of 2007 in the Central region was 11,065 (an increase of 17.22%) and 1,186 big liver fluke worm-infected cases. The number of malaria cases slightly increased in Binh Dinh (6.06%).

At the meeting, measures for next months were also proposed, such as: to intensify the observation and forecast of  the malaria epidemic in highly infectious areas and to strengthen the control and treatment. With the big liver fluke worm disease, the institute suggested provinces to actively find and cure the disease.
