Free eyecare for 30,000 people

Around 30,000 residents in the remote and rural areas of six provinces will be provided with free eye check-ups from October 10 to 23. In addition, 30 poor people will benefit from free crystalline lens surgeries.

These programs will be carried out by the Central Eye Hospital, HCM City Eyes Hospital and Rohto Mentholatum Vietnam in the six provinces of Bac Giang in the north, Thanh Hoa, Quang Tri, Binh Dinh in the central and Can Gio and Tra Vinh in the southern region.

According to the Central Eye Hospital’s survey, around 0.6 percent of the population suffer from blindness annually. Over 75 percent of agents causing blindness can be prevented by timely treatment.

The ratio of blindness among people of 50 years old and upwards is 3 percent. Cataracts are the leading agents, which cause up to 66.1 percent of cases.
