1,700 households evacuated ahead of stormy season
13:47', 25/10/ 2010 (GMT+7)

Binh Dinh Steering Committee of Flood and Storm Control, Search and Rescue is co-operating with local authorities in communes in Phu My district to urgently evacuate 1,719 households safe shelters before the upcoming stormy season as an anticipatory precautions against high flood tides and erosions.

All coastal communes experience the very high flood tides and the severe erosions (with encroachment of over 200m into the mainland along a coastline of 1km) every year and, as a result, many houses are just 1-5m away from the sea. Some even experience erosion right at their houses’ foundations.

The local authorities are promptly planning on resettlement construction as preparation for long-term settlement and production.

In the short term, the Phu My’s local authority is preparing basic living conditions and shelters for the evacuees.
