A workshop on the U.S Lacey Act jointly held by the General Forestry Office under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the World-Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)’s Global Forest & Trade Network in Vietnam took place in Quy Nhon city yesterday.
About 100 experts, managers, and local woodwork exporters participated in the workshop.
John Webb, Assistant Chief of Environmental Crimes Section under the U.S Department of Justice, HK Chen, Senior Forestry Engineering Specialist, and some Vietnamese experts briefed the participants on the U.S Lacey Act and the woodwork export from Vietnam to the U.S and other markets.
The Lacey Act was first introduced by Iowa Congressman John Lacey in the House of Representatives in 1900. The amended Lacey Act, which has been put into practice since April 1, 2010, expands its protection to a broader range of plants and plant products (Prevention of Illegal Logging Practices).
The participants also raised questions on the regulations of the Lacey Act on prohibiting the import, sale or trade of illegally harvested wood and wood products into the US as well as what is considered to be a violation of the Lacey Act.
