Giao Hoi Reservoir dries out
14:1', 3/6/ 2011 (GMT+7)

Because of prolonged heat waves and light rain, rivers and streams in Hoai Nhon district have run dry, particularly 1-million-cubic metre Giao Hoi reservoir at Hoai Tan commune.

The area around the reservoir centre has become chapped. The water level at the deepest point is now 2m.

Giao An Agriculture Co-operative has to hire dump trucks to dredge an irrigation canal from the reservoir centre to rice fields, relieving 31hectares of rice from the drought.

Local farmers are growing drought-tolerant crops like sesame, manioc, corn and peanut plants instead of rice.
