Phu My district Station of Agricultural Promotion performed a trial model of cross-bred corn cultivation over an area of 2 hectares at Van Ninh hamlet, My Tai commune, Phu My district in the 2011 summer-fall crop with finance from Binh Dinh Centre of Agricultural and Fishery Promotion.
The SSC 586 cross-bred corns, which were supplied by Southern Seed Joint Stock Company, were grown at impoverished sandy land. With its 90-95 day growing duration, the corn variety had wide range of adaptation, intensive cultivation and pest resistance; yielded average output of 80 quintals/ha (other corn varieties outside the model yielded 58 quintals/ha).
The model is likely to be expanded, offering My Tai farmers an option of growing terrestrial plants with high economic value instead of wet rice.
