With aims to increase production efficiency and ecological environment protection, in 2005, Binh Dinh Centre for Agriculture and Aquaculture Promotion built up a model of cassava-peanut intercropping at hill soils, exhausted soils or sand clay soils, says Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thuong, director of the centre.

The model has expanded over an area of 746 hectares at districts of Phu My (310 hectares), Phu Cat (386 hectares), Hoai Nhon (10 hectares), Van Canh (40 hectares). Output of the peanuts in the model reaches 2-4 tonnes/hectare while output of the cassava is 25-35 tonnes/hectare. Economic value is double in comparison to intensive monoculture.

The model not only brings higher economic value but also helps to improve the soils, ensuring sustainable cultivation.
