Mat-making offers stable income in Cong Thanh

The commune of Tam Quan Bac in Hoai Nhon district now sees an area of 65 hectares of sedge plants, mainly in Cong Thanh village.

At present, 500 villagers have earned their living by growing sedge plants and weaving flowery mats, according to the commune’s Chairman Tran Van Tien.

Cong Thanh was recognized as a traditional mat-making village in 2008 and it was then financed to upgrade the roads. There are now 400 handicraft weaving looms and 13 mat weaving machines, with a production capacity four times that of the hand operated loom.

Weaving sedge mats brings in a low but stable income. Cong Thanh weavers supplied the market with more than 180,000 mats with an income of nearly 10 billion VND last year.
