Quy Nhon College has four new fields in the academic year 200-2008 with 11,000 regular students. Whether Quy Nhon College is able to "educate on demand" is problematic.

More new fields: more choice

This year's new training fields include computer teachers' training, Vietnam studies, finance and banking, French, Chinese, and education management (for regular training). However, only 4 of 6 new fields proposed have been opened.

"Before deciding to open a new training field, we always base on the statistics of the teaching staff, the infrastructure, and the social demands for that field," said head of Quy Nhon College's Training Department, Nguyen Van Kinh.

In reality, however, the survey on social demands isn't always accurate owing to the lack of scientific conclusion.

When an entrance exam begins, we provide the exact information for students. We plan to make changes in some fields next year, helping students to choose suitable training fields, according to Kinh. Also, Quy Nhon College proposes to open other fields in 2008, such as: economy, automatic control, and society management.

"Educate on demand": a challenge

Selecting a training field depends on students. Some fields are, therefore, enrolled by many and vice versa. But due to the training demand and political tasks, some fields must be opened.

Before a training field is opened, a proposal must be submitted for the Ministry of Education and Training's (MoET) approval based on the teaching staff over the number of students. At present, Quy Nhon College has the rate of 18 students over one lecturer, compared with the MoET's required rate of 22 over 1. The quota of 3,300 students was planned to increase 4,000 in the following year's entrance exam, said Kinh.

477 lecturers, having Prof., Assoc.Prof., PhD, M.A, and BA titles, are teaching at Quy Nhon College by now. To fulfill requirements, Quy Nhon College will upgrade the infrastructure and recruit more lecturers for the increase of training scale. Its training previously based on the MoET's quota allocation, but it now has to follow social requirements even though the education on demand is still a challenge for most universities and colleges in Vietnam.

We haven't got any statistics of graduates who have jobs, said Kinh, but we always considered the students' quality as an important factor to develop and attract more students. The curricula and syllabus are frequently adjusted so that it can meet practical demands.
