Mathematics Dept (Quy Nhon University): 30 years of development
20:44', 13/6/ 2007 (GMT+7)

Lecturers and students of the Maths dept. meet with the mathematician Davit Mumford (Fields Medal winner)

The Mathematics department (dept) is one of 5 first-established depts of Quy Nhon University (previously being Quy Nhon Teachers’ Training College) in 1977. In 30 years of the dept’s development, there have been the large teaching staff who are strong on the profession and completely enthusiastic about the educational career.

In the early days the dept had only 10 lecturers in which there was only one lecturer with the PhD degree and most of them newly graduated from domestic and foreign universities. Since then, excellent newly-graduated students have been invited to work at the dept, lecturers have had to take the higher education, and the others have gone abroad to study and do scientific research at foreign research institutes and universities in the U.S, Italy, France, Japan, etc.

Currently, many associate professors and doctors who graduated from this dept have been studying and working at the dept and the university, such as Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Sum – vice director, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Duc Minh, Dr. Tran Thien Thanh, Dr. Huynh Van Ngai, Dr. Dinh Cong Huong. The teaching staff of the Mathematics dept now includes 27 lecturers, including 2 associate professors and 4 doctors. They belong to 4 subjects of methodology, analytics, algebra and geometry, and applied mathematics.

There are 3 types of training in the dept: regular teachers’ training, in-service training, and crash course. The dept is responsible for training BSc in Maths, MA in the elementary mathematics method, analytics and algebra for central coastal and Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands) provinces. The Maths dept and other depts have expanded their scale of training nationwide since 1998-1999. BAs graduated from the dept are qualified to work in fields of economy and technology.

Alongside the teaching and learning, the dept also focuses on the scientific research with such different topics as profession, management, innovation in training method, and improvement in teaching and learning. Many works on scientific research have been published in domestic and foreign journals. Many works on scientific research at the university and ministry levels were highly appreciated. More than 200 announced works have proved the teaching staff’s potentiality and attempt.

In the Department of Mathematics, there are 27 courses with 3,000 students, including 2,000 graduates, 5 courses with 450 BScs, 15 in-service courses, and 12 crash courses for teachers with over 1,000 students. So far, there have been 9 MA courses including 5 courses finished with nearly 100 MAs. In the near future, the PhD course will be started.

The dept successfully hosted the national conference on Mathematics and Computing, the national Olympic competition on Mathematics and other events which were highly appreciated. In 2005, the dept hosted the international conference on the abstract analytics and applied mathematics with the participation of more than 40 famous mathematicians such as D.Mumford and G.Titan.

Many scientific works were approved, which have been applied in reality and the training. Besides, many books on Maths have been compiled and internally used.

In the past 30 years, Quy Nhon University’s Department of Mathematics has developed and gradually become the leading dept which is strong on profession, creative in teaching and scientific research. The teaching staff and individuals of the dept were offered many prizes from the State, Party, and other organizations as well. In 1997 the third-rank Labour Medal was bestowed on the dept.
