In the visit of volunteer doctors of Palmer College of Chiropractic in Binh Dinh, there were two overseas Vietnamese, including doctor Tran Khac Chung and Nguyen Melinda Hong.
Chung was born in Quang Ngai and then has moved to live in the U.S since 1992. When he was a student of the final year in Palmer College of Chiropractic in 2000, he put forward the idea to have the medical treatment voluntarily in Vietnam, and leaders of Palmer College agreed. Chung has returned to work as a volunteer doctor in Viet Nam for 6 times. “I’m very busy at a private clinic, but I still try to come back to Vietnam in June annually just because of the call of my homeland,” said Chung. The voluntary medical treatment is an annual social activity of Palmer college of Chiropractic to help the people in developing countries. We chose Vietnam as an annual destination due to the introduction and the enthusiastic participation of Doctor Scott Tran (Chung’s name in the US), added Professor James Countryman.
Doctor Nguyen Melinda Hong was born in the US but she can speak Vietnamese fluently. This is the first time she returned to Vietnam. In the visit to Binh Dinh, she worked as both a volunteer doctor and an interpreter. “My feeling when returning my homeland is very special. If possible, I will come back Vietnam next year to do something useful,” said Hong.

Summer holiday is the time for the young to contribute their efforts to social activities. The 2007 summer volunteer campaign launched by provincial Youth Union has been lasted from June to August, particularly in July when many activities will take place. “We have currently focused on the “2007 entrance exams aid” programme because the university entrance exams held in Quy Nhon city are coming,” said deputy secretary of the provincial Youth Union, Nguyen Tuan Thanh.
Binh Dinh Youth Union has set up four hot lines since June 25 at the Youth Union’s office, Quy Nhon city’s Youth Union, Quy Nhon University’s Youth Union and Tuy Phuoc district’s Youth Union to provide useful information, such as the expense of accommodation and transportation for candidates. Also, on this occasion many other activities have been launched, like the cleaning of the 400 km-rails at the Quy Nhon station to ensure the safety for trains.
After the “entrance exams aid” programme, there will be other practical activities in July. Particularly, apart from activities for the “entrance exam aid”, Quy Nhon University’s Youth Union had planned the “2007 summer youth volunteer campaign”. Volunteers have come to An Lao district to help the local people and policy families, and hold activities for children from June 25 – June 1. Volunteers of the Quy Nhon University will also take part in building nursery school in Hiep Tien hamlet, Canh Hiep commune, Van Canh district from the mid-July to August.
