Prof. Dr. Tran Thanh Van visits Le Quy Don high school

Prof. Dr. Tran Thanh Van has been known as the scientist who build a bridge between Vietnamese scientists and world’s leading researchers when holding the international physics seminar themed “meeting Vietnam” for six times. He visited Binh Dinh twice in August to prepare for the construction of an international center for science discussion.

* Why did you choose Binh Dinh to prepare for your project?

We aim to help universities in Vietnam, including Quy Nhon University. We, therefore, held a meeting with young physicists in Quy Nhon with the participation of some coming from other provinces in Vietnam, Singapore, and Malaysia.

We have held similar meetings in Da Lat, Ha Noi, and Ho Chi Minh city since 1994. Alongside this, we also presented scholarships to students of Le Quy Don gifted high school and Quy Nhon University.

I see that Binh Dinh’s students are really good and Quy Nhon University has the potential to fully develop. When planning the construction of an international center for science discussion in Vietnam, Binh Dinh and other provinces were targeted.

* Could you talk more about the project?

Scientists in Europe and America have no summer holiday. During the summer holiday, they often come to a science center to meet their colleagues and other scientists. There are such centers in France and the US. We want to build the first center in Vietnam as well as in Asia.

It will be a destination for Vietnamese scientists and foreign professors to share experiences, connecting to new scientific achievements. It is also an opportunity for universities in Vietnam and other countries to cooperate.

Thanks to experiences in organizing scientific activities and international seminars, we could invite world’s leading scientists. However, we’ll only invest in the infrastructure. Binh Dinh will play a key role in helping the center to fully operation.

I couldn’t talk much more about a project because it belongs to the future. We always want to build a bridge between Vietnamese scientists and foreign researchers in the coming time.

* How about your visit to Binh Dinh?

Before coming to Binh Dinh, we had visited other provinces and cities. After visiting Binh Dinh for the first time in early August, we returned to Binh Dinh to continue our study. An international center for science discussion is expected to help Quy Nhon University to develop and promote the development of science and education in Binh Dinh.

We also realized that provincial leaders and other bodies seemed very enthusiastic about the project. I hope that the construction of an international center for science discussion will be successful.

* You’ve held “meeting Vietnam” seminars for six times, aiming to gather Vietnamese and foreign scientists. What are the differences between the international center for science discussion and such seminars?

We frequently hold such seminars in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City. An international center for science discussion will held big and small seminars and workshops. They will be held by not only us but other scientists. We could, for example, suggest holding scientific seminars in Vietnam instead of holding them in Europe. The most important thing is the convergence. If a seminar is held in Vietnam, many world’s leading scientists will come to Vietnam and Vietnamese scientists will have more chances.

We wish to hold 20 to 30 seminars and each will last about one week. We know that we must face many difficulties, particularly in the following years.

* When is the project carried out?

At present, the “meeting Vietnam” organisation in France has prepared the investment capital. We already studies some places in Vietnam. What must be done is the formalities. I hope that the construction will soon be kicked off and such a center will operate in 2010.
