A deaf-and-dumb girl found her family by chance after disappearing without trace for four years. The girl has returned to her house thanks to a miracle story.

30 secs on TV

20 months ago, Binh Dinh Social Sponsoring Center received a young girl who couldn’t speak Vietnamese. Some guessed she must have been a Chinese girl, who was believed to get lost at Lang Son province’s coach station.

A kind truck driver picked her up and brought her to the central province of Binh Dinh, aiming to help her return home. She was called Bui Lang Son because she was found in Lang Son province.

Some reporters from Binh Dinh Television Station have tried to help her find her family via the VTV’s program “Nhu chua he co cuoc chia ly” (It seems there is no separation). Some Chinese people, who are working in Binh Dinh, were asked to talk with her, but this was useless.

A deaf-and-dumb girl called Nguyen Hong Lac was asked to talk with her. Fortunately, Lang Son and Hong Lac could talk with each other and Son revealed her personal information.

The Son’s story was broadcast on the VTV’s channel and Lac also appeared in the program. Two days later, some people came to the center saying that Lac is their daughter who has lost for nearly four years.

Lost and search

Pham Van Than and his wife Nguyen Thi Thach are farmers in Phu Yen district’s Dong Hoa commune. They have eight children, including four sons and four daughters. Their sixth daughter Pham Thi Thu Sanh is deaf and dumb owing to a disease.

She was illiterate, but she could help her family do housework. On December 19, 2005 she suddenly disappeared when she was tidying up the house after her elder brother’s wedding.

Her family and the whole village then searched for her everywhere. Than also had television stations in provinces of Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa inform the search for the missing girl on their channels. In addition, he travelled to Binh Dinh and HCM City to find his daughter.

The search had no response. Than’s wife passed away several months later because she missed her missing daughter a lot.

On the same day, at Quy Nhon coach station a motorbike taxi driver met a young deaf-and-dumb girl at mid-night and picked her up to Nguyen Nga center, a vocational training center for disabled people. She was named Nguyen Hong Lac and began a new life there until she moved to Binh Dinh Social Sponsoring Center.

She has lived there since then but couldn’t share anything with those who are in the same boat because she is deaf and dumb.

“It seems there is no separation”

After four years since his daughter got lost, Than began to feel hopeless with finding his daughter again. One night when Than and his family were talking about his eldest son’s wedding, his neighbor came to his house and said she saw his daughter appear in the program “Nhu chua he co cuoc chia ly”  live broadcast on the VTV’s channel.

They immediately called the phone number appearing on the TV screen during the program and were informed their missing girl was living at Binh Dinh Social Sponsoring Center.

Than couldn’t do and speak anything because he was too moved when knowing that. His family had spent a sleepless night before going to Binh Dinh.

The rare family reunion at Binh Dinh Social Sponsoring Center brought tears to everybody’s eyes. The center’s director, Nguyen Thanh Chau, said this was the first time he has witnessed a special reunion.

The center’s vice director Ngo Thi Kim Hue went with the girl on the way to her home in Dong Hoa commune. “When Sanh moved to live at the center, she was thin and sad and wanted to commit suicide,” Hue said. “But she was gradually happy and everyone here loves her.

“When joining the TV program to find out Lang Son’s relatives, I told some people that Sanh might find her relatives via the program and that came true,” she added.

When Sanh went to the village, many villagers filled the road to welcome her home after four years. Some people hugged her and were close to tears.

Pham Hoai Sinh, one of Sanh’s brothers, said his family thought there was no chance to meet Sanh again. Some dumb people also disappeared in 2005 when Sanh got lost but no one has returned home so far.

Reunited with her family after nearly four years, Sanh is now taken care of by her father, brothers, and sisters. However, there are still untold stories - that is, why did she appear in Binh Dinh after a few hours? Many questioned if she was kidnapped or got lost.
