Miseries in flood-hit areas
The flood has gradually gone down since November 4, but many residential areas in Quy Nhon and districts of Tuy Phuoc, An Nhon, and Phu Cat have still been flooded. Those who live there are facing many difficulties.
In wards of Nhon Binh and Nhon Phu, there were more than 200 houses isolated in the morning of Nov.4. A lot of people had to climb up to the roofs of their houses to escape from the flood. This has been the most serious flood; thus, people were inexperienced in dealing with it. Most properties and cattle were swept away.
“The water rose so quickly that we couldn’t do anything but climb up to the roofs of our houses,” said Tran Thi Hoa, a local person living in Nhon Phu ward. “Fortunately, my neighbor gave us noodles to eat.”
Many households are now in similar situation. At present, the victims need more packages of noodles and drinking-water.
Many victims in Nhon Phu ward felt really happy when the relief aid was delivered to their places. “The flood came quickly and my family lost everything,” Nguyen Lanh, one of the flood victims, said. “We have lacked drinking-water for two days.”
Bui Khuong Lan’s situation was more miserable. When the flood overflowed his house on Nov.3, his cows ran away. His oldest son was swept away in a vain attempt to catch them and his body hasn’t been found.
All-out efforts to help victims
Thousands of elderly people, children, and the injured have been evacuated from flood-stricken areas since November 2. Rescue forces also made every effort to provide food and drinking water for people in these areas.
Different kinds of vehicles were used to carry the relief aid, let alone two helicopters mobilized from Da Nang to quickly deliver aid to flood victims.
On November 2-3, the victims getting stuck in the flood-hit areas received 12 tons of instant noodles and drinking-waters delivered by helicopters. Functional bodies and local authorities have been trying to offer the relief aid to the locals and implementing measures to overcome the aftermath of the flood.
Colonel Nguyen Ngoc Minh, head of the province’s military headquarters, said hundreds of soldiers and means of transport were mobilized to move elderly people, children, women, and the injured to safe places.
The soldiers were also assigned to bring the relief aid to those who are getting stuck in wards of Nhon Phu, Nhon Binh, Tran Quang Dieu, and other flood-hit residential areas.
Alongside these, the soldiers joined to rescue flood victims and repair irrigation networks and traffic system.
In the morning of November 4, Secretary of provincial Party Committee Vu Hoang Ha visited flood victims in some areas of Nhon Phu ward. He extended the great condolences to flood victims, offering them the relief aid.
He said all relevant bodies were asked to mobilize all available forces to deliver the relief aid to victims, helping them overcome the consequences of the flood. In the areas where the flood has gone down, clean-up activities must be carried out, aiming to avoid the spread of diseases.
On the same day, Chairman of Binh Dinh People’s Committee Nguyen Van Thien and the city’s Chairman Thai Ngoc Bich visited other flood-hit areas in Quy Nhon.
The province’s leader also provided the basic necessities for households suffering serious damage. Also, he asked functional bodies to promptly offer clean water to people.
The province’s Chairman Thien then visited flood-hit areas locating near Ha Thanh River, delivering the relief aid to those who live there. He asked the local authorities to promptly inform the situation to the province’s and city’s leaders.
The delegation also visited Phu Tai industrial zone which were seriously affected by the flood. Head of Binh Dinh Economic Zone Authority, Man Ngoc Ly, reported that 21 businesses suffered great damage, including many enterprises specializing in fertilizer, timber, and foodstuff for cattle.
Thien asked the authority to soon carry out measures to ensure its operation, saying that the health sector must coordinate with flood-hit localities to strengthen clean-up activities.
The flood has gone down, leaving serious damage. Some areas in the province were still flooded. The rescue has being implemented, aiming to help flood victims stabilize their life. Binh Dinh is to urgently implement many measures to overcome the aftermath of the flood in the coming time.
