Students at Quy Nhon University donate their blood |
An estimated 15,000 units of blood are required each year in the province. The volunteer blood donation campaign has played an important role in meeting the ever-increasing demand for blood. After being launched for 14 years, the campaign has been responded by all localities in Binh Dinh with the participation of thousands of Youth Union members.
Eternal flame
A festival to honor blood donors took place on June 15. Among them, many are considered as life-saving heroes, including Vo Van Ho, Dang Ngoc Quoc, Nguyen Ngoc Binh, and Nguyen Van Khanh who have donated 11 times.
Quy Nhon University will also present certificates of merit to students who have donated more than five times on June 22.
When attending the launching ceremony on volunteer blood donation held in An Lao District on June 11, we could see the effect of the campaign. People of different jobs and ages voluntarily donated their blood to save their peers’ lives.
“We simply think that donating blood is to save the others’ lives. Life is precious. We voluntarily share our blood to help the others,” Dinh Van Nho, a blood donor, said.
Also, at the ceremony, when medical workers were finishing their work, a man came in a hurry, asking for the blood donation. He said he had tried to come there in time to donate his blood even though he was busy working.
Saving life
Youth Union members in Hoai An District have donated their blood since early 2000. A 25-member-group of blood donors was set up in 2002 and the figure has been increasing.
Statistics showed that they donated 97 units of blood, saving many people’s lives. Thanks to the blood donors, for example, Bui Thi Thanh Hoa who haemorrhaged after the birth was saved.
“The volunteer blood donation campaign is a highlight of the youth movement in Hoai An District,” said secretary of Hoai An District’s Youth Union, Tran Cong Ung.
The blood donation in Quy Nhon University still proves its effectiveness without any groups of blood donors. With its own measures, the blood donation in the university is highly valued.
Nguyen Khac Khanh, deputy secretary of the university’s Youth Union, said when student register to donate their blood, their personal information would be recorded. This helps unscheduled blood donation campaigns become effective.
Students have donated their blood in more than 10 emergency cases with 2-3 units of blood in each case since 2005.
“Many of them voluntarily donate their blood when knowing there are some cases in need,” Khanh said. “After donating their blood, they only know they saved a life and that’s enough.”
The unscheduled blood donation now becomes familiar in many places in the province, including Hoai Nhon District or Binh Dinh College.
Giving blood to save life is invaluable. Blood saving those who are in the line between life and death is much invaluable
