There were two men taking a one-month baby to the An Nhon district’s Medical Center 10 years ago. They then disappeared. The baby boy was good-looking, but he lost his hands and the left foot.

“Please call him Tran Van Lac”

In a small bag taken with him, a letter with many spelling mistakes was found. His mother writes, “I worked as a hired laborer for a day-by-day living. His father left him and went somewhere… I could only feed him thanks to the help from neighbors and friends. Please call him Tran Van Lac.”

The center’s staff was assigned to give him special attention before he was moved to live at the province’s Social Sponsoring Center in Binh Dinh town.

“The center hasn’t received such an unfortunate baby before; thus, all of us loved him very much,” the center’s director Nguyen Thanh Chau recalled. “When he was old enough, Lac was sent to a private kindergarten and he made all-out effort to study and play with his classmates.”

“I’m always happy”

Lac is now a good-looking boy with bright eyes but he has to suffer from malformations of the legs and arms. Thanks to his great effort and the help from teachers, Lac successfully practised writing.

I really admired the way he used to practise writing and now his hand-writing is quite good. “Despite the congenital defect, Lac has overcome all difficulties and become an excellent student in the past four years in the primary school,” Chau said. “He also won a consolation prize when joining the Binh Dinh computing contest for the young last year.”

It seemed that Lac had to suffer an unfortunate life, but he has overcome all difficulties with the support from the community and his all-out effort. He is now optimistic about his life. Lac shows no shyness or inferiority complex when meeting strangers.

When being asked if he finds anything sad, Lac said he was always happy and sometimes felt sad in case he got bad marks. He happily told us stories about his school, his friends, and games he played. Lac also sang some songs for children when we asked him to sing.

“I hope I will find a job and have a house to live with Quan who is one year old younger than me. He is an orphan and living with me at the center,” Lac talked about his future dreams.
