Underprivileged children given special attention
The city’s 21 wards and communes raised VND382 million for the Fund for Children last year. The Ngo May ward, for example, organized an art performance, raising more than VND10 million. The Fund is mainly used for helping underprivileged children.
The municipal Fund for Children presented gifts to nearly 2000 children on the occasion of special festivals. Its affiliates also played an important role in aiding scores of disadvantaged children in 2009.
Also, VND80 million from the Fund was used to support two children who had heart surgery in 2009, let alone the financial aid for some child patients and scholarships for poor but outstanding students.
Child health care
The municipal bodies have effectively carried out the child health care, including the vaccination program and the child malnutrition prevention program.
The rate of child death from infectious diseases and those who suffer from malnutrition reduced thanks to these programs.
Entertainment activities, such as art performance, sport competitions, and other events, are frequently held, attracting the participation of many children.
The municipal authorities steered functional bodies to carry out three projects under the program No 19. Four wards of Ngo May, Ghenh Rang, Dong Da, and Tran Phu and Nhon Chau commune were supported to popularize the Law on child protection, care, and education and organize a contest on child rights.
Two wards of Nhon Phu and Nhon Binh and Phuoc My commune were also supported in raising the children’s awareness of social evils, contributing to minimize the rate of homeless children and child sexual and labor abuse.
Worries
“The city’s child care and protection reaped encouraging results last year, particularly in child health care, thanks to the synchronous coordination among the municipal agency for labour, war invalids, and social affairs and relevant bodies,” said Huynh Thi Tam, the deputy head of the agency.
The People’s Committees of 21 communes and wards also effectively carried out the child care and protection-related programs; however, some teenagers still violated the law and the staff who is in charge of child care and protection is facing many difficulties when implementing programs for children, she added.
