Many agencies, organizations and families have cared much about child accident and injury prevention in recent years, particularly the prevention of drowning death risks among children.
Many propagation activities to raise the people’s awareness of the risks have been pushed up. The DOLISA granted more than 2,000 lifebuoys and life schoolbags for children in flood prone areas. Yet, the drowning death rate among children hasn’t declined yet.
Every year, particularly in summer, dozens of drowning deaths and thousands of accidental injured are reported in Binh Dinh, the biggest threat to children’s lives and one of the leading causes of disability.
The DOLISA has also cooperated with other agencies to maintain its inter-agency 2009-2010 program on child accident and injury prevention and the program on drowning death prevention among the children in wetlands and flood prone areas, stepping up the reduction of injury cases and security of the children’s lives.
Accordingly, all bodies and local authorities should focus on the children care and protection. The DOLISA’s affiliates should collaborate with relevant organizations to organize propagation campaigns on awareness raising about child injury prevention, particularly the child drowning death accidents, under various forms through different channels.
People should be encouraged to participate in building “safe houses”, “safe schools” and “safe communities” for the children. The programs should also stress on environmental improvement, extirpating risks of child drowning death through activities such as danger sign setting up along dangerous sections of rivers or streams, fence making surrounding high risk lakes, ponds or river or stream sections, water hole filling.
In addition, the offices of Education and Training, the Youth Union and sport organizations should teach children to swim, step up the community participation in the swimming teaching for the children, and promote knowledge of first aid for drowning among community-based collaborators and the people in the wetlands and flood prone areas.
Enterprises, social organizations and families are encouraged to equip the children in the areas with the lifebuoys and life schoolbags. Keeping and taking the children to schools safe during flood season should also be organized.
The activities of the child drowning prevention should be integrated into action plans of the Youth Union and the organizations. They need to be introduced into the nursery, primary, secondary and high schools as extra-curricular activities like games competitions, contests, forums.
Furthermore, the local agencies and organizations have to guide the children towards healthy playing activities to reduce the risks of playing at dangerous places.
