Before the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday begins, 113 students coming from 12 provinces and cities nationwide have joined the “Hi Teacher!” program taking place in the central province of Binh Dinh from February 5-13. The program is expected to bring them useful and interesting experiences.
Experiencing a new life
Joining the program, each student has to know how to adapt to a new life, helping them live together with 3-5 teammates in a week.
“This is the first time I’ve participated in such an interesting event, so I initially felt like a fish out of water,” said Nguyen Thi Anh Dung, a twelfth-grader of Trung Vuong high school. “But I think I will quickly integrate into the new situation.”
30 households in Phu Phong town, Tay Son district, prepared for welcoming the students. 64-year-old Tran Thi Noi said she had tidied up her house and cleaned all bedding so that the students who will live at her house will feel comfortable.
Getting familiar with a new life in a new house is the first task each student has to overcome. The locals’ hospitality and students’ characters helped them feel more comfortable. Most of the students living in the cities were very eager to join activities preparing for Tet, such as the making of cakes, jams, and preparation for the year-end parties.
Alongside these, students had chances to participate in public events, including the making of 1000 banh tet (cylindric glutinous rice cake filled with green bean paste and fat pork), presenting 50 bicycles to poor children in Tay Son district, and presenting Tet gifts to poor kids at Quy Hoa leprosy village.
Participating in the program, the students will experience the reality which is not involved in textbooks, according to Nguyen Thanh Binh, deputy secretary of provincial Youth Union.
Admiration and pride
At 11.30 am on February 6, students came to the Quang Trung Museum. After having lunch with the locals, they attended the incense-offering ceremony at the Museum at 2 pm.
Each group of 12 students solemnly lined up in front of the statue of Emperor Quang Trung. They then took turn visiting the Museum. They spent most time visiting the exhibition room and Tay Son tam kiet shrine.
At the exhibition room where many historical items are displayed, a guide provided students with the information about the Emperor Quang Trung, his life and career as well as the Tay Son Uprising. Many students carefully took note when listening to the presenter.
“Visiting the museum and knowing more about the Emperor Quang Trung and Tay Son Uprising, I’m very proud of our national,” said Nguyen Pham Thien Hong, a twelfth-grader of HCM City-based Le Thanh Ton high school.
