The Military Sealift Command's hospital ship USNS Mercy and the Japanese dock landing ship JDS Kunisaki is expected to be moored in Binh Dinh on May 31, offering free medical check-ups in the province during two weeks.

This is part of Pacific Partnership 2010, the fifth in an annual series of U.S. Pacific Fleet humanitarian and civic assistance endeavors. The mission officially kicked off May 1 when the Mercy left San Diego.

Doctors from the boat will offer medical treatment at Binh Dinh General Hospital and Binh Dinh Eye Hospital before performing surgeries aboard.

They will also provide primary health and preventive medicine for the locals at some schools and upgrade the facilities at Binh Dinh General Hospital and some health stations.

Alongside these, the boat's staff will share their experience and knowledge with local doctors.

“Binh Dinh has prepared for the arrival of two ships and all are ready for their operation here for slightly more than two weeks,” said Chairman of the People’s Committee of Binh Dinh Province, Nguyen Van Thien.
