Vice Chairman of Binh Dinh Provincial People’s Committee Le Huu Loc and nearly 1,000 delegates and local people attended the ceremony.

The UN declared 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) and the theme of WED 2010 is “Many Species. One Planet. One Future.

Biodiversity is the variety of life on Earth, it includes all organisms, species, and populations; the genetic variation among these; and their complex assemblages of communities and ecosystems.

However, while the population is quickly increasing, species are becoming extinct at the fastest rate known in geological history, and most of these extinctions are tied to human activity. This is also a warning about the biodiversity loss.

Many activities have been held in Binh Dinh to respond to the IYB, the WED, and the Vietnam Sea and Island Week 2010, aiming at raising the people’s awareness of the importance of the ocean and sea resources for the sustainable development.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman Loc asked all localities, bodies, and people to strengthen the propagation on the environment protection, the biodiversity, and the seas and islands.

“Each of us should be clearly aware of the environmental pollution, the biodiversity protection, and the role of seas and islands,” he said. “Let’s turn awareness into action to make our environment become greener, cleaner, and more beautiful.”
