Hoai An was a revolutionary base suffering serious damage caused by the wars in the past. Many children were born with the sequels of Agent Orange/dioxin. According to the statistics, the district has nearly 500 disabled children.
In 2002, the “Community-based rehabilitation for disabled children” project was started in Hoai An. The National Fund for Vietnamese Children annually funds the project which was carried out in four communes of An Tuong Dong, An Tuong Tay, An Nghia, and An Huu.
A rehabilitation center was built at An Tuong Tay’s health clinic last year, offering rehabilitation activities to 95 children with disabilities.
Among them, 32 are now practising at the center and the center’s staff will monitor 63 children who were allowed to practise at home. In addition, their relatives were instructed to assist their disabled children in the rehabilitation practices.
The center’s staff also held some events, raising the people’s awareness of the effect of the community-based rehabilitation.
After 9 years of implementing the project, some children are now capable of standing, walking by themselves or moving with their wheelchairs. Nguyen Thi Bich Dung who has paralysis, for example, is now able to stand and lean on something to move. Nguyen Thi Le, having cerebral palsy, is also capable of using the wheelchair by herself after receiving treatment.
The center is expected to be financially supported to maintain its operation, helping disabled children in Hoai An integrate into the community.
