Phan Tuan Hoang is presenting his project at the meeting.

Among 103 initiatives proposed to be funded by World Bank, the “Further measures to connect household waste water pipes to city’s drainage system” project was selected. It is expected to raise the people’s awareness of environment protection and uphold the youth’s role in this field.

When tidying up the public areas, Phan Tuan Hoang, an official of Quy Nhon municipal Youth Union noticed that city dwellers often dispose of household waste water in public places; meanwhile some households found ways to connect their own waste water pipes to the public system.

After the “Action initiatives for environment” program was launched by WB, Hoang coordinated with two other officials to propose his plan.

Their initiative has been carried out within one year, from September, 2011-2012) in two wards of Le Loi and Nguyen Van Cu. It will then be spread in other wards.

Under the plan, they will carry out surveys in two wards and hold meetings to help households to start the work. They will later monitor the implementation of the plan at nearly 6,000 households.

The residents have strongly supported the project as they are able to shorten the administrative formalities and save time. The surveys showed that over 75 percent of households which haven’t connected their own waste water pipes to the city’s drainage system will carry the project.

“The initiative is expected to reduce the submergence in the city, enhance the procedure for waste water collection, and improve the community’s awareness of the issue,” said Hoang. The project needs all-out effort from the youth union members and functional bodies.
