Livelihood for blind people
23:32', 3/9/ 2011 (GMT+7)

According to the statistics released by Binh Dinh Association for the Blind, there are 1,337 blind people across the province. Most of them are facing severe financial hardship and hoping to find suitable jobs to improve their life. The association opened a vocational training course for them.

Blind people are learning how to make straw brooms.

14 blind people coming from districts of An Nhon, Tuy Phuoc, and Tuy Phuoc are the first members of the first vocational training course for the blind in Binh Dinh. They will learn how to make straw brooms.

“It’s very difficult to help blind people learn how to do things,” said the association’s vice director Nguyen Hung Thanh. “They could only touch their products after being finished.”

Being blind as other members, Thanh understand their characters, so he is more patient when teaching them. Besides, they are really industrious as they are thirsty for working. Nguyen Van Chuong, a 60-year-old blind man living in Phuoc Son commune of Tuy Phuoc district, decided to attend the course to earn his living.

Alongside the financial issues, the blind people joining such as course are able to improve their skills and eradicate their inferiority complex to integrate into the community.

The participants are expected to finish the course after three months and they are then able to work independently. A total of VND62.89 million was donated to the participants; however, that is not enough. The association called on charities and businesses to further support the course.

This is the first vocational training course for blind people, but it was held in Quy Nhon, causing difficulties for those living in other districts, according to Vice Chairman of Binh Dinh Fartherland Front Committee Thai Tung Thanh. He suggested that there should be more courses in each district, creating favourable conditions for their travelling.
