Mineral resource exploitation monitored
14:1', 22/9/ 2011 (GMT+7)

On September 20, a team of supervisors from Binh Dinh People’s Council worked with Quy Nhon city People’s Committee on implementation of Resolution No. 12/2009/NQ-HĐND dated on July 15, 2009 by the provincial People’s Council.

The Decision is on plans of using mineral resources which the provincial People’s Committee has authority of granting exploitation licenses till 2015 with a vision for 2020.

As the municipal People’s Committee reports, the mineral resource exploitation at Quy Nhon city mainly focuses on 3 industries: granite stone exploitation and processing at Hon Cha Mountain, titanium intensive exploitation and processing at Nhon Hoi Economic Zone, sand exploitation at two districts of Bui Thi Xuan, Tran Quang Dieu. The provincial People’s Committee granted licenses of the mineral resource exploitation to 8 companies.

The supervisors found that some of the companies were paying much attention to the mineral resource exploitation but not environmental impact assessment as they had pledged. Certain companies who were exploiting stones at Hon Cha Mountain didn’t have solutions for environmental restoration and tree growing as regulated.

Illegal exploitation of the mineral resources were still taking place there, causing landslides, mud accumulation, floods and environmental pollution which leave negative impacts to life of local people.

Meanwhile, the post-license supervision wasn’t performed on regular and determined basis and punishment against the violated companies was slow.

The supervisors asked the municipal government and relevant agencies to clear up the matter of the mineral exploitation management and punishment against the violators, proposing specific solutions for effective implementation of the Resolution No. 12.

The supervisors will work with local governments of 3 districts of Phu Cat, Phu My and Hoai An on September 21, 22 and 26 on the implementation of the Resolution No. 12.
