Fisherfolk receive the financial support from the program

The Thanh Nien newspaper’s fisherfolk assistance program helped five young fishermen in Binh Dinh to build new houses, making them not worry about their families when going fishing offshore.

The house construction starting on April 9 is part of the newspaper’s Dong hanh cung ngu dan tre ra khoi (Accompanying young fishermen to go out to sea) initiative. The GS Oil Vietnam company-funded program donated 40 million VND to each fisherman to build houses.

20-year-old fisherman Mai Quoc Hung, one of beneficiaries, has lived in a makeshift house, which could collapse at any time, for 10 years. However, his family couldn’t afford the upgrade of the house due to the lack of money. Whenever going fishing for days, Hung always worried that his house may be destroyed during the stormy season.

Do Thanh Xuan, another young fisherman, said his family was not only living in a makeshift house but heavily in debt of 100 million VND. His wife and two children had to fight against many difficulties when he went fishing.

The fisherman Nguyen Van Kien living with his disabled mother in a dilapidated house is the most typical case of the program. He has to leave his mother alone during the time at sea, but Kien has no choice as he doesn’t know what to do to earn his living except for fishing.

Cat Chanh commune’s vice chairman Nguyen Duc Chieu expressed his happiness when announcing the program. “On behalf of the local authorities, I would like to express many thanks to the sponsor, the newspaper, and Binh Dinh Youth Union Association for assisting young fishermen,” he said.
